Tonight I went to the opening of the Stephan Vanfleteren exhibition in the Fotomuseum in Antwerp. The exhibition is called “Belgicum” and is an amazing collection of his famous black & white photos.

Without any doubt he’s one of my favourite photographers and you could place him in line with Carl De Keyzer and Michiel Hendryckx.

The problem with these opening nights is of course the fact that the Fotomuseum is relatively small and within seconds the whole museum was overcrowded. With that many people the main exhibition room was like a hot tub. Such an evening is really not ideal to concentrate on his work so I guess I’ll return in a few weeks to really enjoy his breathtaking photos.

The work itself is of course amazing. Every selected photo has something magical, melancholic, mystical … The nice contrast and an amazing depth of field makes every photo a piece of art.

This is truly a must-see for everybody with even the slightest interest in photography. Also make sure you read the interview in DM Magazine (from this weekend). It gives some more background to better understand his work.
